Education Workshops at the London Film Museum

Now that everyone has gone back to school we have put together a series of workshops focussing on Animation, and the filming process.

These workshops are run by professional people in the museum and can be incorporated into a half day or full day visit. There is also the option, if you don't have enough time to fit one of them in, that we can bring the workshop to your school instead*

Animation Workshops

Huw-J has been based here at the museum for a few years and anyone who has visited will no doubt have seen him at work in his studio. He has worked for Dreamworks, Pixar and The Simpsons and is also the creator of Garth of the Armed Services.

Workshop 1 - Stereotypes

30 minutes drawing, 20 minutes Q&A
Cost per child - £8

This class uses the concept of stereotyping and observation to achieve the objective of showing;
1) that if you can see yourself (warts and all) you are able to disarm anyone wanting to use that to intimidate or bully you,
and
2) that the media industry, especially the cartoon and movie industry, use stereotyping to create shows such as The Simpsons and choose to categorise the actors that they want to use.

This workshop is especially good for younger students. A broken down version of this workshop is suitable for people with learning difficulties.

Workshop 2 - Storyboarding
40 minutes drawing, 20 minutes Q&A
Cost per child - £8

This class looks at the concept of storyboarding in the movie animation and Games industry and shows how to look at creating basic storyboards including storylines and character emotions.

Workshop 3 - Art in Action (advanced)
50 minutes drawing, 20 minutes Q&A
Cost per child - £10

This is a longer session but uses aspects of both of the above sessions and also looks at the action aspects of art in movies, animation, games, and comics. It also covers what to look for to create artwork for action sequences.

*Depends on location. Please contact us to find out if your school is in the area we can deliver the workshops to.

Film Workshops

Our workshops give students chance to make their own movie amongst the sets, props and costumes here at the museum. Workshops are an amazing experience into teamwork, communication skills, and creativity.

Workshop 1 - Charlie Chaplin
90 minutes
Cost per child - £9.00

As a tribute to the Charlie Chaplin - The Great Londoner exhibition here, students have the opportunity to explore and express his unique comedy performance style through film.

Employing aspects of physical theatre and mine, students will make their own silent comedy film, with the soundtrack and sound FX being added later on in the edit, as well as being treated with special filters to give the movie a nostalgic sepia and white feel. The preparation will focus on physical movement and expressing emotion through movement and gesture - great for group dynamics and team work.

Workshop 2 - Sci Fi
90 minutes
Cost per child - £9.00

The future has yet to be written in the TARDIS central computer. To prevent a mass zombie holocaust caused by the Daleks, workshop participants have to quickly make their future via their movie.

Workshop 3 - Film Magic

120 Minutes
Cost per child - £13.00

The ultimate film experience. Explore ideas of film magic such as vanishing cuts, strange proportions, green screen special effects, stop motion, and using rare props you will build these into a multi layered story. The workshop will focus on the art of storytelling and dramatic principles such as the 3 Act Structure, and surrealist dreamscape narratives, as well as introducing ideas of character and dramatic conflicts.
